TRADE UNION TO HOST CONFERENCE TO PROTEST THE ABUSE AND MURDER OF CHILDREN
Trade union Solidarity’s Helping Hand Fund has announced plans to host a conference to investigate seven year old Sheldean Human’s tragic death and ways in which the safety of children in SA may be improved.
Sheldean was allegedly kidnapped and murdered by family friend Andrew Jordaan in February. He was subsequently arrested and the case is now in the courts.
The conference takes place on Wednesday at the Tuinrand Primary School in Pretoria.
It will look at issues relating to the Sheldean case, statistics on crimes against children will be announced and the role of the police, the community and the legal system will be analysed.
The union says issues that will receive particular attention include:
• The disbanding of the South African Police Services’ Child Protection Unit
• The decision by the Gauteng Department of Social Development to discontinue subsidies for needy White (Caucasian) children
• The inability of the legal system to protect children
If this conference helps to spare a single child the cruel fate that befell Sheldean Human it will have been a success, the organisers say.
