The SCBWI Gauteng (http://scbwigauteng.blogspot.com) is to host a course on writing for children on the 10 -14 March. The course, which will be conducted by well-known children’s writer Reviva Schermbrucker, will be held in Rosebank.
SCBWI members will be charged R800 per person, while non-members pay R1200 per person. A 50% deposit, paid by the 31 January, will secure a place for prospective participants.
About The Course
If you’ve always wanted to write for children but didn’t know where to start, or you have a pile of children’s stories that are regularly rejected and you can’t figure out where you’re going wrong, this course is for you.
According to the organizers, the five-session workshop is intended for those who are strongly attracted to writing for young readers but feel in need of some guidance and support.
Designed to assist both beginners and more experienced writers in need of a creative injection, the workshop will help you to develop age-appropriate ideas, structure picture book texts and have a shot at writing for the older child (8 to 12).
Participants will experience a series of activities that unlock the barriers to discovering the playful, imaginative world of children's books while being introduced to the disciplines of the many genres that fall under its scope.
The workshop will include elements of writing, making, looking and reading and participants will be encouraged to develop personal projects. There is no pressure to share one's writing with the group.
I’m going to have to look through my finances to see if I can afford it. Considering the amount of learning one will do here, the R1200 investment would be well worth it.
Sadly, finding time to attend the course is a bigger challenge for me.
1. Our childhood is the source.
2. Subverting expectations.
3. One model: plotting a picture book from problem to resolution.
4. Different genres, different age needs.
5. Your personal project.
