An unexpected market for one of my children's stories

Yesterday was hectic. The day began at 4h30 to get Mma and myself ready so we could be at the local hospital at 6am for her monthly check-up. Someone had warned that the hospital queues are so long that it's better to get there before sunrise. There were already close to 20 waiting patients at the MOPD department ( dealing with stroke, heart, diabetes patients) when we arrived.

Overall, Mma's doing better, though her sugar levels were still disturbuingly high (It was 16.1 and 4-6 is desirable, from what I understand.) The neurologist more than doubled the insulin dosage and increased frequency of injection. We were both knackered by the time we got home around mid-day.

The great writing news is that the Free State provincial government asked for my permission to publish one of my children's stories. That really brightened my day, and motivated me to keep writing my stories, even when I don't have a possible publisher lined up.

The story will be published in their newsletter, going out around International Heritage Day in March, I think. I had despaired of ever finding a market for that children's story, so it was heartening to find someone it resonates with.

Today I'm focussing on reviewing Book 7 and doing some client work. It promises to be a relaxed but productive day.

I think it's a lesson, isn't it? Writers write because they are writers, not because selling or finding a reader is a sure thing. Of course, selling AND finding a reader are the icing on the cupcake of life! Congrats, D!

@po- thanks.
@pam - it's such a big conundrum for a working writer, because it's easier to focus on writing stories that have a ready market and where you know publication and readers are a sure thing (for example, when responding to a call for submissions or when you have been commissioned to write something). It's harder then to take a risk to write a story because it's in your head. and yet, those, for me, are the stories that are trully inspired. I would love to have more time to write such stories.
