Invitation to Copyright Event on 21 April 2012

As you know, a recent workshop with a client raised my interest in South African copyright law. So I was very happy to hear that the Professional Editors’ Group, Gauteng branch will be hosting a morning event on Copyright to be held in Parktown, Johannesburg on 21 April 2012. The presentations will start at 9:30 and end by 12:45.

Their invitation says:

As editors, we need to understand legal restrictions on publishing and to advise our clients if we suspect that the manuscript we are editing could involve them in legal action. Many new members of PEG feel that they lack knowledge in this area of publishing, while some of our established members have expressed the desire to revise and update the knowledge they acquired in the past. This presentation, which has been arranged in response to direct requests by PEG members, aims to meet the needs of both groups of editors.

Our presenters are Professor Tana Pistorius, Professor of Intellectual Property Law and Information Technology Law at Unisa, and Jennie Baldree, Permissions Officer at Macmillan. Professor Pistorius will cover South African legislation and key concepts and developments relating to intellectual property, and Jennie Baldree will address the question of what publishers require editors to know and do when it comes to permissions and issues such as plagiarism.

Date: 21 April 2012
Time: 9:00 for 9:30
Venue: EES-Siyakha Conference Centre
5 Sherborne Road
